Match Reports

Home Vs Billesley Lions

The fixture list created an immediate return fixture with Billesley Lions and as predicted in our pre match team talk each week can be very different in football.  We had to make a change before the game as Matt S was injured in training so Dexter played at the heart of the defence.

The match started on a softening pitch, but the temp was still only just above freezing.  Holywell struggled to get their game together with passes going astray and a lack of penetration up front as midfield were unable to boss the middle as they were out numbered by 3 to 2 and on our wide home pitch this can leave holes if the wide midfields forget to tuck in at the right times.  It was never going to be the goal feast from the previous week, but you could see when we got the ball moving down the wide areas there were passes which could open up their defence.  Freddie scored his 1st from a nice ball slotted through by Ross and some determined play to out pace the defender and beat the on rushing goalie., Matt P then out paced their right sided full back and crashed the ball into the net. 2-0, but almost straight from the restart they unlocked our defence as we tried to move out for offside and a late runner slotted the ball over an out rushing Jamie.

Matt P was having a great game really leading by example loads of energy and excellent running and he made a number of chances for the forwards and midfield although thy just simply could not put away of time their runs to get on the end of balls into the box.  A shot from Ollie K flew over the bar and a Freddie header just missed the far post, Ross had a shot blocked, but with all this pressure we lost concentration at the back and a quick counter attack resulted in a move down our  right and a nice ball in for their forward to score with a header 2-2.

Half time and a few words then at last the lads started to play as Paul made changes with Aaron coming on in defence and Dexter going back up front.  The lads started to get the ball wide especially down the left and into Jordan on the right. Aaron did a good job tidying up at they back and Dexter gave their defender s a hard time with his determination and strength.  Ollie H began to win the 50:50s more and more in he middle so we had increased possession.  We settled down to play some decent football and when Freddie got away from their defence he coolly slotted the ball into the corner for 3-2, Jamie still has to be alert to stop a few long range shots but it was all Holywell now and it was only a matter of time until we scored again.  Derrell had come on for an injured Ross and he had some great balls out to the wide areas before he met a clearance first time on the top of the box, his crisp drive was flying into the net, but was blocked at the last minute, the ball fell kindly for Mahad to slot the ball into the net first time.  The pitch was beginning to freeze on the left so it was great to hear the refs whistle,  so 4-2 at the end and 3 points.  Well done to Billesley for their spirit and good play.

Well done to all the Holywell squad the team spirit is superb.
