2008\9 Season Under 16s

Birmingham Minor Cup FA 9th Nov 2008

Drawn away to Redditch United from division 1, gave the lads a massive challenge. Typical cup tie, the weather had left the pitch saturated and extremely muddy. For once the lads were really up for it, even though it was a 10:00 KO.

The team had to show real character and strength to battle through the mud and all credit to them still were trying to play football.  Not many chances for either team, with J in goal showing great technique in atrocious conditions for goalkeepers.

0-0 was the half time score

The second half saw Matt Perry make himself a great chance but the goalie made the save,  a few scares but with Andy, Matt S, Reiss and Joe holding Redditch in front of J, it looked more and more likely one goal would settle it. 0:0 at Full time

Extra time a mud bath of a pitch great stuff for the cup, and 2 great point blank reaction saves from J, kept us in it but we always looked dangerous.

The pitch was now dire; those premadona Premier League stars couldn’t and wouldn’t play in\on that pitch. Great credit to both teams as the lads slugged it out on the strength sapping pitch, the ball now not travelling through the mud in midfield.

0-0 still, then 2nd ½ extra time, a super run from Jack, then onto Mahad who slotted a lovely well timed through ball to Wesley, who still had work to do but with a defender close by and his angle worsening he drove a sweetly struck shot into the far bottom corner of the net, out of reach of the keeper. 1-0 and the lads and supporters were buzzing.

But in the final minutes there came a twist. Within seconds as you are most vulnerable when you have just scored and when we could not clear our lines despite a tremendous tackle by Reiss, their danger man, number 8 was on hand to slot in a late equaliser.

We had to hold out and allow some penalty takers on.

0-0 FT and 1-1 ET and nothing between the 2 sides a real gutsy performance from everyone, including all the subs.

A big thank you to Darrell, an unused sub but brilliant support from him on the side lines a true squad member.

A real sickener in the end but everyone gave their all and should feel proud and we now need to take forward the passion, fight and never say die attitude into all our remaining games.

Any parents got any washing tips for the yellow kit?
